Re-skinning the kid kit

One of my friends wanted me to hold on to her little “kid kit” drum set (Sound Percussion), so I decided to give it an upgrade while I look after it. One of my drummer friends helped me out and disassembled everything and I took some steel wool to the rims and shined them up. The kit consists of:

  • 8″ rack tom
  • 10″ rack tom
  • 12″ snare
  • 13″ floor tom
  • 16″ bass drum

We ordered new Evans heads:

  • G14 coated tops (toms, snare) – 8″ 10″ 12″ 13″
  • Resonant Glass bottoms (toms) – 8″ 10″ 13″
  • Hazy 300 bottom (snare) – 12″
  • EC2 Clear (bass batter) – 16″
  • G14 coated (bass front) – 16″

And a 20 strand 12″ PureSound Custom Series snare wire set for the snare drum.

The bass drum already sounded killer, but the toms and snare not so hot. Now everything but the snare sounds incredible. The snare sounds ok, but since it features single tension rods you cannot fine tune the bottom head independently of the top head. And it doesn’t like to be cranked very tightly either — I like my snares tight, but not picolo tight. All in all, this makes for a nice tiny kit that can play small rooms, just bring a pro level snare instead.
